The combined elements of visual choreography and intense vibrations produced by large drums make taiko a particularly accessible art form for members of the Deaf and hard of hearing community. Since the 2010s, Hinode Taiko has developed strong ties with Deaf drummers who are constantly helping us make our practices and workshops more accessible to everyone interested in learning the art of taiko.
In the video below, Genki Daiko member Deidre Hase walks you through some of the most common ASL signs that Hinode Taiko uses in their practices.
The PDF below includes a list of commonly used taiko terms/Japanese words and phrases. Having these terms written out in a Latin alphabet is a useful for fingerspelling in ASL.
